Immer schön cool bleiben … denn das neue Jahr fängt gut an … De
Rijke/de Rooij hätte man befragen können, ihr
ausgemachtes
gemeinsames Metier war/ist diese problematische Haltung, die stets
zwischen einfacher Coolness und tatsächlicher Betroffenheit zu
stehen kommt und sich die Inszenierungslogik zum Thema macht. Mehr dazu

Wer bleibt schon cool, wenn er im eigenen Land nichts gilt. Marleen Dumas hat das schmerzhaft über viele Jahre erfahren. Ob Preise und Ehrungen da Abhilfe schaffen, ist fraglich, ihre Ausstellungseröffnung in der Nationalgalerie in Kapstad war für das Establishment aus Kultur und Politik kein Ruhmesblatt, sie waren nicht gesehen. Den Katalog der ersten großen Ausstellung in ihrer Heimat kann man über den Buchhandel sicher besorgen. Wir nehmen diese allerdings zum Anlass, nochmals auf unsere ganz fabelhafte wie umfangreiche Publikation Female hinzuweisen, die wir nach wie vor lieferbar halten! Mehr dazu hier! Wie eine kleine Bombe hat der Band von Albrecht Fuchs eingeschlagen: MK 95. Das war unsere Absicht, denn nicht nur der »Stern« hat jetzt zu seinem Kauf aufgefordert, davor war der Handel, ganz kurz vor Weihnachten, ganz kurz entschlossen und hat ordentlich hingelangt. Wir haben das mit sehr großer Freude registriert. Mehr dazu hier! Und wenn man denn ganz fest der Überzeugung ist, aus einem kleinen Ladenhüter, also dem hässlichen kleinen Entlein, wird nie mehr ein Schwan, dann muss man nur die neueste Ausgabe des Magazins Monopol aufschlagen und wird gewahr, wieso Dirk Skrebers Buch von 2004, It rocks us so hard ho ho ho, in der Karriere dieses ungewöhnlichen wie begabten Malers doch nicht vergebens war, sonder vielmehr wahrscheinlich einer seiner Meilensteine ist. Mehr dazu hier! Da hilft es immer, schön cool zu bleiben, und das ist natürlich für den Individualreisenden die wichtigste Maxime. Wie er dennoch unter die Räder kommt oder warum er sich eigentlich diese Art Privatmythologie längst schon hätte aus dem Kopf schlagen müssen, damit wird er im neuesten Streich der Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, sozusagen all-inclusive, überrascht. wunderbares, einen Meter achtzig langes Leporello im End-Format A4,
ordentlich gefalzt und gestaltet, beidseitig schwarz bedruckt, sicher
verpackt in einem Stülpdeckelkarton, dessen Inhalt letztlich
niemanden kühl läßt: von Ralf Ziervogel die

2.) Im Museum Kurhaus
Kleve kommt es zur ersten Einzelausstellung von David Thorpe in einer
deutschen Institution. Grund genug, den begnadeten
Scheerenschnitt-Künstler, der sich längst schon auf
große raumgreifende Installationen verlegt hat, einem
breiteren
Publikum mit einer umfangreichen Publikation bekannt zu machen. Mehr

3.) Thierry Colin legt
im klassischen Duplex-Verfahren einen Fotoband vor, der einen sofort in
seinen Bann zieht. Hier ist ein irgendwie gebrochener, mitunter
desaströser Blick des Kolonialen zu besichtigen, und dann in
schönen Bildern (Beyond the edges), für den sich die
frankophone Welt wenig schämt und von dem wir nur wenig mehr
als

cool …
the New Year has already got off to a good start … One might have asked de Rijke/de Rooij about it because their joint field was/is this problematic attitude that constantly comes to rest somewhere between simple coolness and actual concern and which makes the logic of presentation its theme. More here! How can anyone remain cool when he/she is not recognised in his/her own country? Marleen Dumas has suffered this indignity over many years. It’s hard to say whether prizes and awards have offered her any compensation; her exhibition opening at the National Gallery in Cape Town for instance was not a glorious chapter for the cultural and political establishment as they didn’t show up. It is indeed possible to order the catalogue of her first large exhibition in her own country through the bookshops, but we are using it to remind you about our fabulous and extensive publication Female, which we still have in stock. More here! Albrecht Fuchs's book MK 95 has made an incredible impact. Obviously, this was our intention, for it wasn’t just Stern magazine that urged people to buy it; prior to that booksellers responded well and decided just before Christmas and at short notice to stock their shelves profusely. Suffice it say, this made our Christmas very merry. More here! And if you are completely convinced that the smallish, slow seller—that veritable ugly duckling—will never ever become a swan, then take heed and have a look at the latest edition of Monopol this will help you to understand why Dirk Skreber’ book It rocks us so hard ho ho ho from 2004 was not just some vain pursuit in the career of this unusual and talented painter, but most probably one of many milestones to come. More here! It always helps to stay cool and that is the paramount maxim for the individual traveller. How it comes about that he still falls foul of things or why he hasn’t long since cast this sort of private mythology from his mind—well, the latest escapade by the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt will provide him with an all-inclusive surprise. PS: And then there are new books we’d like to announce, whether it fits in the layout or not! 1.) First of all a wonderful A4 accordion folder measuring 1.80 metres, neatly designed and folded, printed black on both sides, safely boxed in a lidded carton with contents that certainly wont leave anyone cold: Ralf Ziervogel’s work Young German Art. More here! 2.) David Thorpe’s first solo exhibition in a German institution will take place in the Museum Kurhaus Kleve. Reason enough to make the work of the gifted silhouette artist, who has long since moved on to spatial installations, available to a broader audience with a comprehensive publication. More here! 3) Thierry Colin presents a volume of photographs in classical duplex process, which immediately has you under its spell. It is possible to glimpse a somehow broken-down, disastrous view of the colonial world—in beautiful images to boot (Beyond the edges)—for which the francophone world is a little ashamed and about which we have little more than the remotest of clues.
