Zero forever!

»Early on, even before he was thirty, Mack renounced colour as a medium and appropriated light, in its dimension as a projection in space. Light – the element of the abstract and the ideal, that redemptive ground in the works of Piero della Francesca and Vermeer alike. However, whereas in the case of these two masters, light functions as a firm structure and a permanent connective factor duly effecting an aesthetic stasis, in Mack’s case, light and its fluctuations create an organism, the shimmering appearance of which constantly reconfigures itself in a perpetual dynamic flux. Mack is interested in the problem of the reflection of light and its role in the production of spatial relationships. Its intermediate stages reside in a field in which the sequence of time intervals are polarised and duly combined in a common dimension. The frequency of their encounter is intensified by the possibility of multiplication«, Umbro Apollonio is writing early 1963.
Heinz Mack was a co-founder of the ZERO Movement. His sculptural works and light art have had a profound influence upon art since 1960. His forthcoming 80th birthday in 2011 and the rediscovery of his works by a younger generation have prompted this substantial homage. The book comprehensively illustrates the continuity of Heinz Mack’s utopian conception of art, in whose works new forms of perception of light, space and colour play a central role, in the same way that structure rather than composition has been his main focus of attention.
