Drawings and Bozetti

Whereas the comprehensive retrospective staged last year by the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in Bonn was devoted to the sculpture and painting of this distinguished emeritus last year, Andrea Madesta presents examples form the graphic work combining excellent drawings with small sculptures in the Kunstforum der Ostdeutschen Galerie in Regensburg.
Anybody taking a closer look can immediately see that these graphic works are some of Marcus Lüpertz’s most beautiful. The oftentimes coarse and heroic, the consciously added mutilation or antique finish of his »great works« is missing here, the repertoire of forms is more direct, more immediately. The Bozzetti also form an illustrative quality rooted in bodily dimensions, devoid of any loud tones. In this way, drawing and sculpture conduct an intimate dialogue which occasionally can disclose information more precicely about the internal dynamic/tension in Markus Lüpertz’s work, than perhaps the so-called »great, finished« works may wish to do. Thus Andrea Madesta has succeeded in her selection of creating an individual view of Markus Lüpertz’s work, indeed to a certain extent, an updating thereof: »important mythical sculptures appear as Chimera within which the artist deconstructs traditional mythology.«
