The Revenge of Minimalism

Born in Copenhagen in 1974 and now resident in Berlin Jeppe Hein and his work have been causing quite a stir over the past five years – with his rolling benches and moving walls at Cologne’s Museum Ludwig, his surging curtains of water at Essen’s former coke works Kokerei and at the Venice Biennale or at a Gallery in Berlin where steel spheres at best scrape unchecked against the walls otherwise maliciously smashing into them. German Sunday newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung describes this as a »revenge of minimalism« where Hein manages to channel subtly, as few have done before him, the liberating rampage of the happening into the ossified cases of the fin de siècle just past, into minimalism that has become design. This first monographic publication of the artist appearing to accompany the exhibition at Kunstverein Heilbronn and contains many full-spread and full-page colour illustrations of the spectacular work and a complete index of all work with function descriptions.
