Certain Arrangements

Jochen Schmith comprises Carola Wagenplast, Peter Hoppe, and Peter Steckroth. They have been working together as an artist collective since 2000, under the pseudonym Jochen Schmith. The starting point for the exhibition in the Kunstverein Braunschweig and the book was an interest in the classical Villa and its original use. However, what seems at first glance to be site-specific, assumes an extended sense of global significance upon closer inspection, after walking through the rooms and viewing the cabinets of the Kunstverein, in accordance with the route laid down by Jochen Schmith. What at first seem like historical references, turn into reflections upon current phenomena by going through the book. The installations and interventions are delicate and reserved, frequently focusing upon the room in question, yet at all times rich with diverse connotations. In short, an exhibition and a book that links and combines heterogeneous thematic strands to create a multifaceted analysis.
